Mr. Matthews advises the Stanwood Group as a Board of Advisor Member and also separately provides services to Stanwood Group clients under independent engagement. Before joining Warshawsky Seltzer, PLLC in 2021, Dan served as Supervising Franchise Attorney at Drumm Law from 2017 to 2021. Prior to 2017, Dan spent six years as a franchise and securities attorney regulator for Washington State. Dan’s legal practice is focused on franchise, securities, and tax law. His background as a regulator helps him navigate compliance and regulatory matters, giving a competitive edge to his clients. He has served on several multi-state project groups where he took a leadership role in drafting franchise and securities policies. Prior to his time as an examiner, Dan worked in private legal practice crafting tax strategies. Dan has also worked on a fixed-income securities trade desk for a team that managed $8 billion. Dan attended law school at BYU in Provo, Utah taking (when he wasn’t studying) every opportunity to hit the slopes at world-class ski resorts. During law school he served as Executive Editor of the BYU Law Review. He also earned a degree in Economics from BYU.
Dan has a tremendous foundation in franchise law, having reviewed more than 600 FDDs while at Washington DFI and worked with countless other franchise systems while at Drumm Law.
He was appointed Chairperson of the NASAA Business Organization Project Group charged with managing 7 state regulators.
He was involved in creating the latest Item 19 Financial Performance Representation Rules that went into effect in 2018.
He assisted in Washington DFI’s statement of policy creation and implementation
He was selected to speak at more than 15 state and federal franchise/securities regulation workshops across the country.
He was selected by Franchise Times and designated on their prestigious “Legal Eagle” list.
He was awarded the CFA Charter (Chartered Financial Analyst) from the CFA Institute (2015)
